Holter Monitoring

Holter Monitors record heart rhythms for a 24 hour period. When you receive a Holter Monitor, small, painless pads(electrodes) are put on your chest. These connect to a lightweight unit which attaches to a belt or shoulder strap. The device is worn for at least 24 hours. A reading is recorded in the monitor which the physician reviews. There is no preparation for this test. It is designed to monitor the heart rhythm and rate. The test is non-invasive. While wearing the monitor, follow these steps:

  • Try to sleep on your back
  • Don't take a shower. A spone bath is OK
  • Follow your normal routine. Don't avoid stress, work or exercise
  • If an electrode falls off or the unit makes noise, call to see what you should do.
